This is a podcast created as part of a group assignment for Discovery Civics. Our task was to “create a podcast that describes more than one viewpoint on a local, regional, national, and/or global problem.” We chose to explore the issue of mass incarceration, specifically focusing on the #EndTheException campaign. While the task may have seemed straightforward at first, we delved deeply into what it takes to create an impactful podcast and to function effectively as a team.
Throughout this process, I learned valuable lessons about teamwork, as I had to collaborate with individuals whose working styles and perspectives were different from my own. This was challenging and occasionally frustrating, but it ultimately helped me grow as a team member and develop skills I didn’t have before. Although I generally prefer individual projects, I’ve come to recognize the importance of collaboration in nearly every field; whether it’s an industry, organization, or business.
I’m sharing this podcast because I want to gauge my progress and document my work to measure how much I improve in the future. As with my oral presentation post, this is part of my journey in refining my skills. In this podcast, I reference the ethical principle of the “domino effect,” just as I did when discussing the preservation of Native American culture. This time, however, I explicitly named it rather than simply describing the concept. I felt it was too relevant to exclude, even though I’ve referenced it in prior work. I am aware of the repetition, and it is not something I would generally do unless I believed it was the correct and necessary choice.
I hope you enjoy listening to this podcast and that it provides some insight into the #EndTheException campaign from the perspective of HBCU students. Let me know your thoughts, and hopefully, you’ll find something meaningful in our discussion.
