The Tuxedo Ball

Today, my mom and I (to no one’s surprise) attended the Tuxedo Ball at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, which began at 7 p.m. Earlier this morning, my mom mentioned that there would be a “Congress meeting” at the hotel, specifically for kids my age. Around 15 people attended—all my age and all Black. The hosts of the meeting shared that 40 years ago, a group of accomplished Black individuals created the Tuxedo Ball to instill pride and confidence in their children. During the session, we discussed the importance of diversity, personal experiences with prejudice, ways to foster positive change, dating and interacting with different genders, and how to approach people we’re interested in. After the meeting, I spent some time in my mom and cousin’s room, watching football and reading. When 7 p.m. finally arrived, the ball officially began. It featured great food, music, and an open bar. I met so many amazing people; it was truly a high-quality experience. The event was a meaningful gathering and a wonderful way to spend part of the holiday break.
