I am sharing a link to a persuasive speech I presented for my Foundations of Oral Communication class. Although this was not my strongest performance—my final speech was where I felt most comfortable and performed my best—I wanted to include this speech to document my progress as a public speaker. My aspiration to become a lawyer requires mastering public speaking, and this class has been instrumental in developing my social skills.
The course, which I completed in an accelerated 6-week summer session, involved a substantial amount of homework and included one filmed speech submission instead of an in-class presentation. While the class emphasized incorporating all speech elements—such as attention getters, credibility, and transitions—rather than the strength of the argument, I believe that a compelling argument and unique perspective are also crucial.
In retrospect, I could have presented a stronger argument and used more logical appeals (logos). The accelerated nature of the course limited my rehearsal time, but overall, I consider this speech a good starting point on my journey. I hope you find it insightful.
