Today, I was informed that I am not allowed to tour the White House because I did not pass the background check conducted by the Secret Service. While I acknowledge my record and controversial history, I disagree with their decision and believe it reflects poorly on their analysis. I cannot support the reasoning behind it and will exercise my right to voice my disapproval.
This decision has undoubtedly shaped my opinion of the Secret Service and will remain a factor in how I view them moving forward. I take some solace in knowing I am likely not the only person denied access, finding a sense of community in shared experiences. As a proud American citizen with rights, I wish the Secret Service well, but I also hope they are prepared to stand firmly behind their decisions. Personally, I no longer have any desire to visit the White House—indefinitely.
To whoever made this decision, I wish you the best and urge you to consider engaging in actual conversations with the individuals you deny access, rather than making assumptions from information from a criminal justice system that has historically failed people from my demographic. Onward to the next chapter!
